One of the most common questions we get at Diamond Formal Wear is: should I rent a tuxedo or a suit? The answer depends on your event, the dress code, and your personal style. Here is everything you need to know.

What Makes a Tuxedo Different from a Suit?

Lapels

Tuxedos feature satin or silk-faced lapels (peak, shawl, or notch). Suits have matching fabric lapels throughout.

Buttons

Tuxedo buttons are typically covered in satin. Suit buttons are usually exposed and made of horn, plastic, or metal.

Pants

Tuxedo pants feature a satin stripe down the outside leg seam. Suit pants are uniform in fabric.

Shirt

Tuxedos are worn with a formal pleated or bib-front shirt with French cuffs. Suits pair with standard dress shirts.

Accessories

Tuxedos call for bow ties, cummerbunds or vests, and formal cufflinks. Suits work with neckties and simpler accessories.

When to Wear a Tuxedo

  • Black tie events and galas
  • Formal weddings (evening ceremonies)
  • Award ceremonies
  • New Year’s Eve formal parties
  • Prom (traditional choice)

When a Suit Works Better

  • Semi-formal and cocktail events
  • Daytime weddings
  • Business formal events
  • Religious ceremonies
  • Retirement and anniversary parties

The Modern Middle Ground

Today’s formal wear blurs the lines. A midnight blue suit with satin lapels or a slim-fit tuxedo with a necktie instead of a bow tie are both perfectly acceptable. The key is matching the formality of your event.
